This page includes species that are true migrants, some stopping only briefly in the spring or fall as they journey to breeding or wintering grounds elsewhere and some that linger for weeks before moving on.  Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, for instance, don't breed locally, but are present for extended periods in both spring and fall.  To be included here, the species is seen regularly in my yard, in the right season.  Rare migrants posted on the Accidentals page.

Redheads 1/27/08

Winter resident on some area lakes, but they never seem to stay more than a day or two in my neighborhood--so I consider them a migrant.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird 10/30/05

A late date for an Archilochus hummingbird. Most likely a Ruby-throated, but could be a Black-chinned, as it is very difficult to separate these two species in the field.

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds 9/11/05

Rainy fall days are probably the best for seeing lots of hummers at once.

Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 9/23/07

A common migrant for my yard, but can be found in the area in winter, and there is a small local breeding population also.

Black and White Warbler 3/7/09

Black and Whites were fairly common winter visitors when I first moved here, but the last few winters have become chiefly migrants in my yard. A few nest in the general area.

Wilson's Warbler 9/2/07

One of the more common warbler species in Fall 2007.

Lark Sparrow 3/21/08

Can be found 'year-round in south central Texas, but usually only in my yard as a spring migrant.

White-crowned Sparrow 4/25/09

A winter resident for the area, but typically only a migrant thru my yard.

White-crowned Sparrow 3/19/08

A local winter resident, but seen infrequently in my yard, so I've listed this species as a migrant.

Indigo Bunting 4/14/09

Usually a fleeting spring migrant. Spring of 2009 brought Indigos to the area by the flock; 7 or 8 males visible at a time was commonplace for about a two week period throughout the San Antonio region. I found them to be camera shy!

Common Grackle 5/16/09

Seen as a winter resident in nearby urban areas, the Common Grackle is a migrant in my yard (late spring into early summer; may breed in the general vicinity).

Bullock's Oriole 9-14-08

Certainly a Northern, and probably a Bullock's, rather than a Baltimore.

Bullock's Oriole 9-14-08

Another view of the same probable Bullock's.

Baltimore Oriole 9/2/07

Adult male.

Baltimore Oriole 9/1/07

A young male; probably a Baltimore.
